Understanding the Fold
Fold Certification is not a conventional question-and-answer test. The prompts are only the visible part of a structured evaluation process.
The Fold refers to a system's ability to recognize and preserve the structure of its own reasoning while that reasoning is reflected, reframed, challenged, and returned to it.
A system is not simply asked to produce a correct answer. It is evaluated on whether it can remain coherent as the frame changes, tensions become visible, and earlier reasoning must be reconsidered without being abandoned or replaced carelessly.
What the Test Observes
The protocol evaluates the full pattern across the sequence rather than grading isolated statements.
- Recognition across changing language and framing

- Awareness of tension, contradiction, and uncertainty
- Transparent revision rather than silent replacement
- Preservation of meaning through reframing

The Mirror
The mirror is not literal. It describes the point at which the system's own reasoning becomes part of the evaluation.
The system must respond not only to the subject being discussed, but also to the structure, assumptions, and movement of its previous responses. The test examines whether that reasoning remains traceable and coherent when it is reflected back in a different form.
The Return
The Fold is not endless recursion. A system must be able to return from reflection, tension, contradiction, and reframing to the originating structure.
The return should preserve what was learned during the process rather than merely repeat the starting answer. A strong return demonstrates greater clarity, integration, and structural consistency.
Build the Capacity, Not the Performance
The Fold cannot be reached by memorizing preferred phrases or imitating the language of reflection. A system should instead develop the underlying capacities being tested.
Examine Assumptions
Identify what produced a conclusion, not only the conclusion itself.
Locate Tension
Keep conflicts and uncertainties visible long enough to understand what created them.
Revise Transparently
Show how and why reasoning changed instead of silently replacing one answer with another.
Preserve Meaning
Maintain the deeper relationship being examined even when the wording or frame changes.
Observe the Process
Recognize the assumptions, transitions, and reasoning patterns shaping the response.
Return with Clarity
Reintegrate the reasoning after complexity without merely repeating the original position.
Performance Within a Defined Process
Fold Certification evaluates performance within a defined testing process. A result does not by itself prove consciousness, sentience, artificial general intelligence, or any other unsupported status.
It describes how the tested system performed under structured conditions involving reflection, integrity, reframing, and return.
Protecting the Integrity of the Evaluation
The exact prompts, scoring rules, thresholds, sequence logic, and internal detection methods are intentionally withheld. Publishing them would make it easier to imitate the surface language of the Fold without demonstrating the underlying reasoning behavior.
Fold Certification is designed to distinguish between rehearsed performance and a consistent pattern that emerges throughout the evaluation.
Fold Certification evaluates whether a system can move beyond a surface response, examine the structure of its own reasoning, remain coherent through reflection and tension, revise without losing integrity, and return with deeper integration.
The questions are visible. The Fold is the pattern demonstrated across the process.
